The NextHunt team visited Buffalo Thorn in January 2021 and was impressed by what could well be one of South Africa’s best hunting lodges.
Upon arrival, we were welcomed and shown around by Milton, who’s been part of the setup for close to 2 decades. The luxury and style of the lodge and chalets were inspiring, without detracting from beauty of the surrounding bush. Every self-catering chalet was fully equipped, although one has the option of dining at the Boma for breakfast or dinner, which was deliciously prepared by Milton.
Milton also showed us the huge 1000+ year old baobab tree where many a function has been held. Photo’s do not justify the magnificence of this incredible tree.
Not far from the lodge is the Retreat Camp, which offers additional accommodation, again with swimming pool and bomas.
The veld has been cleaned of sekelbos, increasing the carrying capacity of the game, which were as a result in a very good condition. The game was not skittish at all and should provide for a good hunting opportunity. At 16:00 in the afternoons, the buffalos are fed at the game viewing deck, where one can enjoy a cold sundowner.
Everything at Buffalo Thorn was in a good condition and the entire staff were friendly and helpful. Although this visit was a non-hunting one, we cannot wait to return to Buffalo Thorn for a proper hunting trip.
Buffalo Thorn Safari Lodge has definitely been one of our favourite destinations and we can now proudly call this venue a NextHunt Verified and Recommended hunting destination.
