The NextHunt team recently visited Attie and Marietjie on the farm, Uitzicht Jag & Gasteplaas near Groblersdal, about 180km from Pretoria. The farm is situated at the foot of and against a steep hill, with lots of sekelbos, which makes for thick cover. As this is exclusively a bow-hunting farm, the animals aren't skittish and one unknowingly gets within a few meters of them before you meet eye to eye.
There are about 8 different ground blinds as well as an elevated tree hide, which was previously the children's tree-house. The animals are in very good condition year round as there is enough food to eat. Pigs are scarce as they prefer the neighboring vineyards for their take-away. There are a lot of impala, wildebeest and kudu of decent size.
We stayed in the farmhouse, halfway up the "mountain", with a wonderful vantage point over the valley below. Attie and Marietjie stay in their own cottage adjacent to the farmhouse and enjoy hanging out with their guests. They are warm and friendly people who enjoy company. The climate is more moderate at the farmhouse, as the winters are warmer and the summers are cooler.
Attie took us to see the bush camp, which he built himself using excess scrap materials on the farm. The result is a very basic, yet romantically rustic shelter hidden away in the bush. There's gas for cooking and for the hot water for shower. There are also beds with mattresses. Nothing else, you bring the rest.
Uitzicht Jag & Gasteplaas is a beautiful farm with many winding roads and lots of game. It is not a particularly large farm, but big enough to accommodate a large group of bow-hunters or non-hunters. We really enjoyed our stay. Uitzicht Jag & Gasteplaas is now a NextHunt recommended farm.
